Phones, tablets and computers keep us connected, but they also hold a lot of personal information. A few simple habits can help keep your devices — and the information on them — more secure.

Secure Your Devices: 5 Simple Ways to Protect Your Information

1. Keep everything updated

Those update notifications are easy to put off, but software updates often include important security fixes.

Keep your:

  • Phone and tablet operating systems updated
  • Computer software updated
  • Apps updated
  • Antivirus and security software current

Quick tip: Turn on automatic updates when they're available.

2. Think before you plug in

That free charging station may be convenient, but be cautious about connecting your device to unfamiliar USB ports, cables or drives.

Avoid plugging unknown USB drives or cables into your devices, and consider using your own charger and electrical outlet instead of a public USB charging port.

Quick tip: Bring your own charging cable and wall adapter when you travel.

3. Be smart about public Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi at airports, hotels, restaurants and other public places can be convenient, but unsecured networks may put your information at risk.

When using public Wi-Fi:

  • Avoid accessing sensitive accounts or entering financial information when possible.
  • Use a trusted VPN for added protection.
  • Make sure you're connecting to the correct network.
  • Turn off automatic Wi-Fi connections.
  • Forget the network when you're finished.

4. Make sure you can find your device

Before your phone, tablet or laptop goes missing, make sure its tracking feature is turned on.

Depending on your device, these features may allow you to locate it, lock it or erase its information remotely if it's lost or stolen.

Don't wait until you need it to find out whether it's enabled.

5. Lock it down

Your device's lock screen is one of its simplest lines of defense.

Use a strong PIN, password or passcode, and take advantage of fingerprint or facial recognition when appropriate.

Avoid easy-to-guess codes such as 1234, birthdays or other information someone could easily associate with you.

Take the 5-Minute Device Security Check

Before you leave this page, take a few minutes and check:

☐  Are my devices and apps up to date?
☐  Are automatic updates turned on where available?
☐  Is my device protected by a strong lock?
☐  Is device tracking turned on?
☐  Does my phone automatically connect to public Wi-Fi?
☐  Do I have my own charger for use away from home?

If you found something that needs attention, fix it now. A few minutes today could help protect your information later.
